From the desk of Jocelyn Lamont, Candlelighters Executive Director

Hello Candlelighters Community!

It is my sincerest hope that you and your loved ones have been spared the terrible health effects of COVID-19 and are managing to adapt to the many social distancing practices that have been implemented to remain COVID-19 free.

These times are indeed unprecedented but together we will get through it. I am determined to find something every day to be grateful for and despite the April showers we are experiencing today, to see a brighter tomorrow!

As we all know, childhood cancer doesn’t stop for anything and despite this global pandemic, young cancer patients continue to go to hospital for chemotherapy and radiation treatments, many remain in hospital, and unfortunately, families continue to receive the news “your child has cancer”.

At Candlelighters, we continue to deliver as many of our programs and services as possible while keeping both staff and member families safe. The benefits of our CyberKids and E-Reader program can be much better understood now, as all of us are in situations where we must learn to cope with isolation and we look to keep up-to-date with information and learn more about our new circumstances.

We are working hard to keep connected with our member families to assure them we are here for them. Coping with childhood cancer is hard, for every member of the family. Candlelighters has counselling services available even now. And for those finding the additional stress of the COVID-19 situation on top of childhood cancer especially difficult, we encourage you not to hesitate at all to reach out for some telephone or video counselling with Jennifer Finestone, who works so closely with us. We’re here to help!

What to do with all the kids at home 24-7? Jason Campbell, our Community Development Coordinator, has been posting numerous activities and virtual places to visit. While many of us have tuned in to the Tiger King on Netflix, why not set the kids up for a visit at the San Diego Zoo on line. It’s captivating (this I know as 25 minutes slipped by in the blink of an eye when I checked it out J) Check out all our social media platforms for great information! FB Inst Tw

The impact to our economy is tremendous, to what extent we don’t know. The future of many sectors, including the non-profit sector that Candlelighters is part of, is filled with uncertainty and darkness. Candlelighters remains committed to providing support for families of children with cancer. If you can, please consider making a donation to Candlelighters and help us #LightTheJourney. Thank you. We will get through this and your support can help ensure we continue to support 100% of children and youth diagnosed with childhood cancer here in this region.

Today, in closing I want to wish you all a Happy Easter, or happiness in the celebrations of your faith. It will be a different kind of celebration this year, but I urge you all to find joy in any way you can and create joyful memories (maybe even new traditions) that we can look back on in the years to come. Stay safe and see a brighter tomorrow!

Warm Regards,

Jocelyn Lamont
